As a Journalism major I often wonder what the future has in store for me. I have no clear indication of what I want to do with this major, but I enjoy writing and I firmly believe in the right to Freedom of Speech. Even in 21st Century America are our rights at risk. But across the globe, people's rights are being plundered by those who rule them and those who dare stand up against them are punished or obliterated with impunity. As a lover of history, I have studied many great empires. Ancient Rome once stood a mighty empire, a Republic like the world had never seen.
Rome was not built in a day. A great nation that stood for 500 years and over decades of decay, corruption, and political descent, it fell but in a bat of an eye lash. America is no different. We overreach. Our country has it's fingers in every pie. That being said, we find ourselves intervening in conflicts abroad. It is no secret that journalists are being murdered and imprisoned worldwide in an effort to silence free speech and see to it that crimes against humanity never see the light. This is not only a wrong against Journalism and Freedom of speech, but a wrong against Mankind! Who will protect those who sacrifice themselves to protect the weak and the innocent?
Richard, I applaud your commitment to the First Amendment (specifically a free press). Pairing your passion for journalism with history makes for an informative and expansive view of the importance of journalism in any healthy democracy.
